This is a fun tale, perfect for young readers who like the magical world of bubbling brews, smoke that takes the shape of a giant hand and spells that turn a nagging mom into a ram. The author does a great job of weaving the classic witchcraft mythology into the pressures of a middle-school kid. The school society felt very authentic to me, and I like the way Jennifer reasoned through each obstacle in her path. My son loved it and is getting all of his friends to read it. Our whole family enjoys the Shadow Zone books -- just the right amount of hocus pocus mixed with a lot of heart. Can't wait to read more by J.R. Black.Product details

This is one of the books that first got me hooked on reading. That was ten years ago. Now, at age 15, I have two full bookshelves of nothing but sci-fi and fantasy. The book itself is about a girl named Jennifer, her mom gets her to do some help around the neighborhood (you know how moms are) Jennifer decides to help two old ladies next door. But she finds out that they possess magical powers, and that she, Jennifer, has some of her own. Like the Harry Potter books that came much later than it, this book is a must read. Doesn't matter that it's out of print; BUY IT ANYWAY
